TYPES OF PLANS

Mike's Barn Plans are either Pole Barns, Post & Beam Pole Barns, or Post & Beam. What's the difference?

Pole Barns:

Mike's Pole Barns are designed with 6x6 and 4x6 pressure treated posts (square poles) that are buried in the ground and rest below the deepest frost line in your area. All can be supplied with a concrete frost wall foundation if desired. Most framing is conventional grade stamped lumber. 6x6s 4x6s 2x6s 2x10s, All materials you can readily find at a local building supply company.

Post and Beam Pole Barns:

Mike's Post and Beam Pole Barns are designed with larger 8x8 pressure treated posts (square poles) that are buried in the ground and rest below the deepest frost line in your area. These plans can also be supplied with a concrete frost wall foundation if desired. Main beams are large solid 8x12 timbers with large 6x8 joists to support the second floor. Roof framing is usually conventional grade stamped lumber rafters. There is much more work and labor involved in this type of barn, but if you are after that big beam look inside, it may be worth it. Most supply yards do not stock the big timbers, so locating stock may be an issue.

Post and Beam:

Mike's Post and Beam Barns are designed with larger 6x6, 6x8 and 8x8 posts that rest on pressure treated sills on a concrete foundation frost wall. Main beams are large solid 8x8, 8x10, and 8x12 timbers with 6x6 and 6x8 joists to support the second floor. Roof framing is usually 6x8 rafters. These structures require a lot of work and labor. Most supply yards do not stock the big timbers, so locating stock may be an issue.

It really comes down to a choice of what you would like to see inside. 2x10 joists overhead, or timber joists.
